Day 285 (W, 111012) — Fair Fare Review; UPs Workout Day 14

Fair Food Review.  On our trip to the Great State Fair of Texas yesterday, I indulged in some wickedly bad-for-me food.  If it was fried, I at least considered it.

I started off with two of my targets for this year’s trip: the winner of this year’s Best Tasting award, Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack, and one of last year’s finalists, Texas Fried Frito Pie.  Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of them so I can only offer some stock photos from the web.

Anyway, the BCiaF was pretty tasty.  A bit weird, and the breading was more like bread crumbs than a pancake, but still tasty.  It was also a bit small for the price.  Then again, everything is overpriced at the Fair and I knew that going in.

The Fried Frito Pie was delicious, just like last year.  The portion size was larger than the BCiaF.  Mrs. NJ, my daughters, and I all had a couple of pieces.

Of the other items on top of my Find-and-Eat List, I managed to miss the Walking Taco, Deep Fried Texas Salsa, and the Fried Autumn Pie.

I did find Hans’ Kraut Balls and the Chicken Fried Bacon, however, and this time I remembered to snap some pictures.

The Kraut Balls were smaller than I thought they would be from the pictures I’d seen on the web; they were only a bit more than half an inch in diameter.  They had a nice taste to them, good sauerkraut and sausage in a savory batter.  Oddly, they came with a bit of raspberry jam as a sauce.  Of course, I also got some Düsseldorf mustard to dip them in.  Both, it turned out, are really good on Kraut Balls.

The Chicken Fried Bacon was good.  Tasty and cooked just right, not too crispy and not too limp, my daughter summed it up well, “I like it, but it’s sort of greasy.”  Well, yes, sweetheart, it’s bacon that’s been deep-fried.

A Deep Fried Twinkie, one of the famous pair which started the deep-fried craze years ago (with Deep Fried Snickers), was up next. Nora and I had a great time snarfing down this wonderful treat. =)

One happy find was the Deep Fried Pizza.  It was BIG, hot, and good and was a bit filling for all four of us.  Find this one on the rides end of the Midway and have a slice.  You’ll thank me for the rec later. 😉

The last item I have a picture for is the giant, iced cinnamon roll we got at the food court.  It was enough to put me into a diabetic coma, but I bravely fought my way through and came out the other side, a bigger man for the experience.

I did find a places selling Fried PB&J, Deep Fried Butter, Deep Fried Cookie Dough, Belgian Waffles, Deep Fried Biscuits and Gravy (too small and only one per serving), and Chocolate Covered Strawberry Waffle Balls, but I was too stuffed to buy them.  Sorry, but the report on those will have to wait for next year.

I never did see places selling Chocolate Bacon Crunch Cake, Fried Apple Bites, or — and this was my biggest disappointment of the trip — Deep Fried Cheesecake.

In and among all these culinary wonders, we also had two orders of nachos, a nutty ice cream bar, some chocolate milk, several diet cokes and iced teas, cotton candy, a strawberry frozen thing, a slab of fudge, and probably a few other things as well that I can’t remember.

Finally, I managed to break the law during my visit to the Fair: I somehow forgot to get a Fletcher’s Corny Dog this year.  Damn. =/

=====

Exercise. I woke up at 1:30 AM this morning and only slept about 15 minutes from then until I got up at 5:30 to go to work. Today’s workout — Day 14 of my UPs workout plan (a repeat of Day 11) — is going to be tough.

Last week, this workout took more than 19 minutes to complete.  Since I am focusing on form this week, concentrating on doing the exercises correctly, I expect it may take me more like 30 minutes this time.  If I am going to have any hope of not gaining several pounds before my weigh-in on Saturday, I need to work up a big sweat today and Friday.

Also, I am toying with the idea of using an alternate form of the exercises today (e.g. a dive bomber instead of a standard push-up or a Hindu squat instead of a standard squat).  What do you think?

If you have a suggestion about my workout for today, please leave it in the comments below.
